Service Description

This course is the first level of standards-based certification available to firefighters. This course provides students with an introduction to the history of firefighting, fire ground operations, organization and standards, fire science, fire suppression, proper use of firefighter protective equipment, rescue equipment, and tools. It also includes Hazardous Materials Awareness/Operational and WMD response training. This course prepares the student to take the Connecticut certification exam based on NFPA 1001, 2019 Edition. Course materials and exam fees are included in course fee. Course length: 144 hours The Firefighter I/Hazardous Materials Awareness - Operational is designed to prepare the student for certification. The course includes on-line access and both the practical and written exam. This is a physically demanding course and students should be in good physical shape. Students are expected to attend all sessions. This course meets Monday/Wednesday 1800-2200, and some Saturdays or Sundays 0800-1600. This course requires a significant amount of out of class time studying on-line. Students that do not keep up with the on-line component will be removed from the course.
